After reading about the nightmares of Christmas shopping in the news, I've decided to shop mostly on-line this year. How will you be shopping for Christmas this year? (Or how do you like to shop in general?)

I go to the stores. I rarely buy christmas gifts online. But I try to go in the off hours.

I shop both ways, however my choices are not necessarily contingent upon the Holidays at all though. Given the choice however during the Holiday season, I'd rather avoid the stores instead.

Reminds me of the annual Filene's Basement Bridal Gown sales.

Exactly! The way they grab at those gowns, it's a miracle they aren't ripped up and useless by the time they get to the register. That's part of why I'm shopping on-line this year. Between the crowds, parking, long waits at the register--I'd end up with a pounding headache before I got back to my car. Although, there are some who just love getting that good deal in the store. As long as they're enjoying themselves, I guess it's Ok. But, I'm not up for that kind of stress.

One year, just a few days before Christmas I was at the mall. The mall was very crowded and there was a real uneasiness in the air. I went up to the customer service booth to ask a question and then without warning, I was jolted/pushed 10-15 feet! Apparently gang members were hanging in the mall and had a beef with another member and pushed him without regard to any of those around him at all. BTW, fortunately I wasn't hurt at all, but it reminded me why I tend to avoid shopping in stores during the Holidays like the plague.

Glad you weren't hurt! I've had some stress shopping on-line (out of stock items, complicated check outs), but it doesn't compare to malls/stores. Our news channel reported the pick-pockets and other thefts at local malls. Some lady was talking about how she was jostled and later realized her wallet was missing. (Although, she must of left her purse open for that to happen.) There's one store here I might do a little shopping at later in the month. It's open 24 hours, so I can pick a time when the crowds will be thinned out. I went to that store last year at "prime time" and there weren't any shopping carts left! And it's a huge store with tons of carts! So, I was quite shocked to find *not one* cart available. And the lines were so long, they stopped toward the back of the store. I didn't see any pushing or shoving though. Everyone was behaving themselves. So, that was a good thing!

I hate to 'shop', period. On the other hand, I like picking out and buying in stores or on-line. I get double the enjoyment with on-line purchases however, once when you select/order the items on-line and the anticipation of another rush when they arrive.

I heard that Detriot has been hit hard by the recession too, which doesn't help things at all, I am sure.

So true. People are tightening their belts around here. Even the malls are in foreclosure! I don't know what'll happen with them. (They're still open right now.) But, I was shocked to find out that 3 local malls are behind in their payments.

I do enjoy getting something nice in the mail! (Beats getting bills...lol)

Mostly in stores. I don't trust on-line retailers very much. I use a few but not too often.

The last time I went to a mall during the Christmas shopping season, was back when I was working in theatre. We had *one* night off in December before Christmas (I also worked a day job) so that was all I had. It was a madhouse, filled with rude, snarky people. I do not like crowds when they are pleasant, but I cannot take a nasty, mean-spirited crowd at all . I ducked into the bookstore and bought How the Grinch Stole Christmas and ran out to the car. I thought I would read it, be in a better humor and go back in. Instead, I read it and thought "Yep--there is nothing to do with Christmas in that mall," and went home. I don't remember what I did for presents that year, but whatever it was, people still talked to me . I do love to give my loved ones gifts, but not if it means going into a den of rabid wolves. Online all the way, here. Never had a problem, either.

I go to the store for most things....but, do a bit on-line. I NEVER buy clothes on line (unless I know the store, and the brand of clothes I am buying..... and I am 100% certain of the "look and feel" of the clothes and how they fit)... Books? Almost always online Electronics? on line..depending on the size of the item... (except if I happen to be at our neighborhood Apple Store).. And, I have bought a decent amount of stuff from eBay (usually stuff and oddities that I am collecting)......like the apple crate label from a long-defunct apple orchard in West Virginia where my dad worked as a kid. Someone on eBay had one!

I do both. I have 2 birthdays that fall between Thanksgiving (most of the time) and mid-Jan. I get a lot of things at A.C. Moore (a craft chain). They always have coupons in the paper for 40-50% off 1 item. I can do a lot of the shopping for DD2, DS(they sell K'nex and Magnetix there). I do buy clothes in person too. However, like Donna, I love Walmart's Site to Store option. Sometimes items are cheaper online too so you can order it online and pick it up at the store. My SIL even sent my son's Christmas gift that way one year. I gave her my username at Walmart.com and she sent it to our walmart.

Someone on eBay had one! You've heard about the 30% off deal with Microsoft Live Search, right? I got an email from Ebay today inviting me to take off 30%- up to $200/item, when I found the items using live search. This has been WONDERFUL. New Canon Digital Rebel Camera? RETAIL: $1000, EBAY: $550, LIVE SEARCH: $390 Elaborately carved antique mahogany bed from 1920? DEALER: $1200+. EBAY: $600, WITH LIVE SEARCH: $420. JOSEPH ABBOUD TWO-PIECE MEN'S SUIT- MSRP: $700, EBAY: $250, WITH LIVE SEARCH: $175 Alas, this cheap Dutch Calvinist is doing his best to save his hard-earned money despite the ridiculous deals this year, but things are getting awfully tempting. I did buy the suit, but that was because I needed a replacement and it was as cheap as JC Penney's.

I shop in the stores all the time. I also prefer smaller locally owned stores and very rarely venture into Wal-M**t. Buying on-line does close to nothing to support your local economy. Here is an interesting link about shopping locally.
