Interesting question ... I have observed over the many years of working in professional offices that women tend to be more judgmental and critical towards the way other women dress and present themselves then men do.

TOTALLY. We need only to look at the current political race to see that. We've seen so many articles and comments on Sarah Palin's clothes, hair, makeup, etc. Or Hilary's pantsuits, hairstyle, and the sound of her laugh. I have yet to see one article about Joe Biden's or John McCain's ties, socks, belts, or hairdos. Barak Obama's appearance is spoken of, primarily in terms of people mentioning his race or his youth - although to be fair I think I might have seen one or two articles about his suits. With McCain it is his age - but only because if he wins he'll be the oldest president in history (elected during his first term anyway). Or let's even think about the initial reception among world leaders to Condi Rice vs. Madeleine Albright. Both Secretaries and State. No one was commenting on Albrights legs - the way they did Condi's (remember that - back in 2001 Ariel Sharon said he couldn't concentrate when he was at the White House because her legs distracted him?) Or even think about all of the focus on Janet Reno's appearance back in the 90s. Regardless of what you think about any of these women politically - their appearances are mentioned more than their male counterparts. And we definitely see the same types of things in the entertainment field as well.
But outside of politics and entertainment, definitely - the way a woman looks can initially open (or close) doors for her. But integrity, brains, and talent can open shut doors - and once that door is open - it is what is needed for her to stay there. Women who are not attractive by societal standards do often have to work harder, but because of that, they are often able to keep what they achieve - because they have to be good at what they do. Also, I think pretty women may also have a harder time being taken seriously.
But, I think this is a bit the same for men too - not so much in terms of physical beauty, but in terms of height. Tall men seem to be able to get farther easier, are more readily looked at for management positions -- where shorter men are often overlooked or may have to work harder.

In my field, I have not seena disparity between how men & women are judeged in this way. I think we all subconciously do judge people by their appearance, esp regarding things which are (or we think are) under a person's control--hygeine, clothing, etc.
But as has been said, looks are only going to get you so far.
I have done pretty well in my job, even though I don't wear make-up, etc. I'm not a slob, but I am FAR from fashion concious- probably could win the award for worst dressed in the office... I do well, because I can be depended on to get the job done, have knowledge in a variety of areas, etc.

I have seen cases where professional male engineers dressed rather slovenly in the office, and it was considered to be just one of their quirks. I think 't feel that women could get away with the same "quirkiness". When I was working in an office, I never wore makeup much nor did I dress in the latest fashions, but I dressed appropriate to the office dress code, and that was enough.

It depends on the Profession. Even on "dress down" days the standards are pretty high for both gender's at many places.

Depends on the profession. Women are definitely judged more on their appearance if they are in sales or similar positions in which they deal with lots of people face to face.

I've never really thought about it. I would say that women are probably judged more on their appearance than their male counter-parts.

In general perhaps that is true, and it may even be true for the clerical staff where I work or in other divisions, however in the division where I work, (scientific/technical stuff) I have not seen any discrimination or otherwise different treatment based on appearance in the women and the men...at least not work related. Of course, I think that other than the office manager, there are only two (used to be three) women in the division...and the one that would not be considered "attractive" by physical standards is well respected for her professional skills--one of the best in the division...actually, one of the best in the entire organization--she was recognized as "Employee of the Year" for 2007--out of 3000.

I think women who are overly concerned about wheather they are good looking enough have that aura about them and dont shine thru. Other people really do have a tendency to judge someone according to what they think about themselves. If a confidence doesnt shine thru, it can affect ones work and the boss will think the woman doesnt have what it takes because she doesnt think she has what it takes.

In my job i have certain job expectations as far as production output requirements. I will take any person who 1) I get along with. 2) Can handle their end of the log so i do not have to babysit them or do their job for them. 3) Can keep up with my output. It does not matter whether they are male or female. Black or white. Young or old. I do not give a rip how they dress as long as it conforms to safety standards. That is the bottom line. If i maintain high production output numbers combined with quality product i get big raises and the praise of my supervisor. He leaves me alone and i am not a burden to him.

In my experience, I think women are generally judged more by their appearance than men in their profession. There are, however, many layers to this question/issue.
...Here are some random thoughts and observations.
I have seen many women get ahead soley on their looks I believe in various careers, from waiting tables, to teaching in schools, to being receptionists, nursing...all the way to being lawyers (I think this field is the worst in my experience)....
The better a woman looks, the more she can hide her weak professional skills. A better looking man may benefit from his appearance, but not be able to completely hide his incompetence. It's harsher for women, but also more beneficial. The unattractive women seem to have greater negative consequences in employment and the more attractive have greater benefits than men of the same parallel level of physical appearance.
I pointed out law as an area I've seen looks matter for women a lot, because I've had freinds in law tell me outrageous stories of people getting ahead based on looks and being completely incompetent. It's shocking osme of the things I've heard and that is what greatly contributes to my lack of respet for much of that profession along with other issues. Law seems so corrupt in so many ways and looks is one area of that for women.

Another woman and I were hired at the same time. There were lots of people who were part-time ahead of her - and were waiting for full time. She is gorgeous and my current field is one where looks are everything. She's gotten roles based on a headshot alone. She's a nice person - works hard - and she is good at what she does. However, there are lots of other people who been there for longer than her - are also kind - and are as good or better (simply because they've been at it longer). Well ... a full-time slot opened up recently. They gave it to her although some of the other women have been waiting for well over a year. Again, she is good - I'm not taking anything away from her - she will make a great full-time employee. But, it is clear that one of the major reasons she got to where she is now because of the way she looks.
This is just how the world works, particularly in this industry.

I work in royalties at a music company. We don't interact face to face with many people outside our areas. Heck, I can go for weeks without ever seeing my boss. Most of what I do is online which is a good thing since I mainly deal with our overseas territories and the time difference would be a nightmare.

The Lord really chastised me for my last response, so I had to write again. He put it in my heart that regardless of how a person looks, he is in control and can raise up or move down whomever he wants. The woman at my job - the Lord raised her and put her there. He knows exactly why and it is in his mercy and grace that she is there - as am I.
