So I'm 16 years old going on 17 , I'm a junior in high school . My grades aren't the best but there not the worst and lately I've been really scared of going out into the real world . i don't like school i never have , i have struggled with math since i was in kinder-garden but I'm a pretty good reader . I'm not interested in huge money making jobs i just want a job that's pays good and i enjoy doing. i have been thinking about highway patrol lately but just haven't decided . So maybe some fatherly advice from some older men would be nice .

thanks deermouise , yeah i don't know why i said " fatherly advice " haha i think i meant advice from some older wiser people who have been through this sort of thing

I actually didn't like school either, but that all changed when I went to college. It's completely different experience that will give you opportunities to find out what you really enjoy and excel at. Give it a shot. If you don't like it, then find something else to do.
Education will help you, but it is not absolutely critical to success in life.

Take some "fatherly" advice, GO TO SCHOOL. I don't know where you are, but it is very hard these days, especially these days and in this economy, to get a decent paying job without at least a bachelor's degree. For example, you cannot even apply for 99% of government jobs without a degree. I have more than 30 years experience in purchasing and inventory and I couldn't even apply for a purchasing position with the government or a government contractor because I have no degree. The fact that I would need little or no training, have established contacts around the country, and am already familiar with their peculiar rules means absolutely nothing. It's all about the degree. Without one, the only jobs you can count on are minimum wage ones in places like Walmart.
You don't need great grades, just passing ones. Apply yourself, work hardest at the classes you like the least, and take your SAT's. And like deermousie said, find something you like to do and then look for work in that area.

Hi Zack. I graduated college a year ago, and scarily enough, we're only seven years apart.
Do you feel as though God is calling you to do something specific? This doesn't happen to everyone, but I feel like it happens to about 40% of the population. Maybe he is calling you to go into missions, or to be a teacher, or to be an oil trader, or to work for the California State Police.
Growing up in IL, I never had that when I was your age, so I talked things over with my parents. My mom noticed that I was into computer games and building websites, so she recommended that I go to college and study Computer Science. Today, I work on a system that helps price corporate bonds at a bank in mid-town Manhattan.
If God isn't calling you to do something specific, take comfort in the fact that who you work with (or go to school with) is often more important than what you do (or what you study.) This is a wholistic decision that you will have to make when the time comes.
I would encourage you to seriously consider a four-year college degree. Besides, it will give you more time to figure out what you really want to do when you "grow up."

There are many people who are counter-examples to the notion that college improves your odds of success and a lack of college education decreases them, but on the whole, an in-state flagship school education (like UC Berkeley, UCLA or UIUC, in my case) is one of the best investments you can ever make. It costs maybe $40K in tuition over four years at the most, and boosts your starting pay from maybe $35K to maybe $60K. ($90K if you wind up as a programmer out in California like many of my friends.)
A business (or better yet, finance) degree would be a good practical degree for someone with good writing skills but not necessarily quite as strong math skills.

My career has changed several times. Sometimes because my business changed and I had to make a change or be left behind like buggy whip makers in the early 1900's, and sometime involuntarily due to being laid off. But I've always found something else I enjoy doing, and have never gone too long without finding a new job or being able to get a new business off the ground. You are mighty young, too young to worry about it. Concentrate on finishing school and college. 4-6 years makes a huge difference in maturity and self awareness when so young. Try different things. If you think you are interested in a specific direction, try a job in that field for a little while to make sure it's the right major for you.

At my age, 71, it would be normal advice to say go to school. In my day as a young man, that was good advice. But things were much more stable. My work started in the early 50's. My first job was as a projectionist at our local theater.
I would hate to try and get into the work market now. Things change so much and many jobs and vocations are simply out of date. Then there is the economy that really doesn't look good.
So, my grandfatherly advice would be two things. What do you competely enjoy doing. Or as you would say, what turns you on or floats your boat. Second, I would get closer to the Lord who posseses all wisdom and see all. He wants every human to be productive and fruitful. He has a plan for every person born. So, hang out with Him. He's the coolest of cool.

Take some aptitude tests to see what your strengths and weaknesses are and go from there.
