I have noticed that more recently that the fan on my computer goes into overdrive sometimes when accessing websites, etc. on my computer. This only happens when I either have a lot of windows open or even when just going to a graphics heavy website.

I am concerned that my CPU might be overheating and that I could end up losing my computer. Does anyone have any suggestions other than just backing up everything?

You don’t have to back up everything, just the stuff you think is important. Is it the CPU fan? Is it a notebook? Make sure all the vents are clean and not obstructed.

All the vents are clear, it is a desktop computer that I am using. It must be the CPU fan, as I am sure that it isn't the hard drive at all. The only other thing that it could be is the CD drive, however there is no reason for it to be accessing that at all. It does it even when there is no disk in the drive as well.

If this is a desk computer it would be a good idea to take the cover off and see if there is dust on the fan and the CPU. That needs to be cleaned off so the heat can disapate.

OK Gary, although I am a little hesistant to do that though as removing the cover tends open up the possibillities of other things going wrong too.

If it's a standard case, opening it up will not cause any problems. If it's a sealed system or all-in-one, it may be difficult to open. If it is still under warranty, opening it up may void that warranty.

I try to remember to open up my computer at least once a year and blow off the dust with canned air. I'm always surprised at how much has accumlated.

Suggestions well taken! I will have to open up the unit at some point.

At work this is a very common problem for computers that are left on for long periods of time as dust just collects to that cpu fan. When the cpu gets too hot then the cpu starts lowering the power and making the computer slower and slower. It will speed it up if you get the dust off and it is the cpu fan.

I just discovered something this morning, I checked in the Windows Task Manager for performance and right now my computers CPU usage is bouncing between 50 to 90 and 100%. When it gets into the 90's, the fans start thrashing!

The thing is I just booted up my computer and I am not using anything that would be warranting that kind of demand. It seems like it is randomly bouncing up there every 10 seconds or so and I don't know why. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

Well, it sounds like it is your CPU fan, but it could have been the GPU (graphics card) fan, since you mentioned highly graphical Web sites.
As to archiving, EVERYONE should archive important files (i.e., anything you don't want to lose that isn't already on CD).
I recommend using Unison (available for Windows, Mac, and Linux) (Found here) to archive things to a burn directory, then copy the burn directory to a CD. You can make as many profiles as you need to synchronize different folders. I use it to archive things to subdirectories in a burn folder, then synch the burn folder to my USB key or burn its contents to CD. It is user friendly and much more robust than the old Windows(tm) Briefcase folders. You can even use it to synch your files to remote server space using FTP or SSH.

Something (Operating system, malware, security updates, etc.) is using a ton of your processor. It shouldn't run that high. Have you run virus and spyware checkers lately to see if something like that is causing all this CPU load?

I haven't, it seems like it is doing with it for a couple of months now.

You can see the task using the CPU time in the Task Manager. Just click on the Processes tab; Image Name is the name of the process or task and the CPU column--fourth to the right--shows percentage of CPU time used by that process/task. You can sort the listing by clicking on, for example, the CPU heading to sort by CPU usage in ascending and descending orders alternately. Then google the process name for more information on what it is.

Ok I did that, and it looks like proprietary software that came with the system but I do not use at all is using the most memory.

MXTtask.exe is using a lot of memory too, however this is what is needed for my email client to work ok.

And what is dwm.exe?

Ok, I closed a few processes; one's that seem useless for the most part. CPU usage has down down a bit. It is now steady at around 10% and seems to be peaking at 50% or so instead.

I shut down the taskmanager, the dwn file, my printer process, the unused program that came with the system, and even abode flash player as well.

Another irony on all of this is that forums had been very slow off and on but since I shut these down, the pages are loading a whole lot quicker now.

Thank you for your help! It is much appreciated!

Ok, I spoke too soon, when I just made this post, it took at least 10-20 seconds for the computer to go back to this screen and the CPU memory spiked to 80% as well.

Also, even though I closed mxttask.exe, it still seems to be running in the background as well.
