I see a parade of movies listed here that I know beyond a shadow of a doubt would sicken me. It's a new generation. Can anyone honestly tell me there isn't the worst of 4-lettered words and blasphemie in some of these and maybe some blood and guts off the chart scenes and maybe some sex and nudity? Tell me none of this toxic refuse is in any of the films being discussed on this movie thread.
I seriously thought this movie thread was going to be about how us 'holy christians could find a way to finally turn hellywood around or shut them down. I'm shocked....but not really. The world resembles the church and the church resembles the world. Ok, blast me.

Well, some of the movies discussed on this thread are free of what you described.

If God is convicting you about your viewing habits, then by all means, respond to that.

Understand that not everyone is going to have the exact same perspective as you do. There are no cookie-cutter Christians. Everyone is at a different point in their walk, and struggles with different areas of temptation.

The BEST movie I've seen in a long time is Diary of a Mad Black Woman.

It was really a surprise......

You will laugh, you will cry.....you will CHEER.

Tyler Perry is a GENIUS....

I HEARTILY endorse this movie.
It runs on cable quite often.

meaning as long as people follow the rules of the forums, you do not have to be a christian to post on here

Jim, I think the post under your first post was directed to the first two posts, not yours.

The OP was not asking for us to list our favorite movies, but rather (having apparently not read the description of this folder) was being critical of us for discussing movies not to his/her liking.

You're absolutely right, Mike.
Thanks.....
I totally missed that.

what innuendo? as has been suggested, i was simply stating (in response to the OP) the fact that not everyone who posts on these forums is a christian and therefore the standards and expectations that the OP has are unfair (and unrealistic - even among christians). better that they should define parameters for discussion first, as seen below:

I seriously thought this movie thread was going to be about how us 'holy christians could find a way to finally turn hellywood around or shut them down. I'm shocked....but not really. The world resembles the church and the church resembles the world. Ok, blast me.

i have no idea what this is in response to, or whether there is a question or point of discussion anywhere in here. all i see is invective and judgement. they could've framed the question as "what are your fave movies - please no movies with swearing or blasphemy (and i'd be interested in discovering what this word actually and practically means to them) or violence or sex or nudity". but they didn't. in fact, a movie could have none of these things and still be absolutely anti-christ in its content and intent while, arguably, a film could have any or all of those things and point us towards christ and Truth -- or at least that's my opinion. i think that the bible gives us stories in which these things happen and so why wouldn't the stories we tell in cinema (or any other medium)?

that being said, there are any number of things we could discuss: what is or isn't acceptable for viewing in a movie? how do we determine what is acceptable? is there a way for christians to influence hollywood, either as consumers or producers of culture (which in and of itself is a huge assumption as there actually are a number of christians working in hollywood so just imagine how bad it would be otherwise)? is it necessary to "shut hollywood down"? what is the perceived or supposed difference between the church and the world? our viewing habits? our choice of "favourite movies"? perhaps there could be a discussion of how and why those movies are our favourites - i would be more than willing to state why i think magnolia or fight club or amistad or prospero's books or marvin's room are among my favourite movies, in either theological or cinematic terms. but somehow i doubt that will happen here...

If you have the audacity to watch anything besides the Left Behind movies, and maybe Fireproof, then yep, you pretty much are. ; )

but why should christians make movies for christians? why should we remain/ become a subculture of the film industry? i'm not sure this is the kind of separation the bible speaks of. our faith is an outwardly active one, isn't it? the bible doesn't call us to create ghettoes of christian activities - we are called to involve ourselves with culture (and therefore people). christians are more than welcome to make films for christians (though that seems somehow counter-productive to the sharing of the gospel of the kingdom) -- but where will they go for training or funding in order to achieve the same levels of excellence (and by that i also include acting, writing, special effects, set design, costuming) if not "the world"?

OP,

I'm painfully reminded of Pharisees who thought they had it right, and the whores and tax collectors Jesus actually hung out with when I read your post.

As far as redeeming this thread:

I like:

The Shawshank Redemption - Adult Themes, Profanity

All of the LOTR films - Pagan based fantasy characters

Fried Green Tomatoes - Adult Themes, Profanity, among other ideas

The Notebook - Rebellious Teenagers, Fornication

Man on Fire - Violence, Revenge

None of these film characters are perfect. I tend to think of them as an artistic expression of real clay-footed people. That's what I like about these films. They're all about characters that somehow find redemption in the worst of circumstances.

Facing the Giants was excellent! Fireproof was great. They're for Christians, by Christians, and they uphold Christian values. I'd like to see more movies like them. :)

But I am reminded that I'm not supposed to live an "Ivory Tower" sort of Christianity when I recall that I'm supposed to be salt and light. I'm reminded every time I see a friend stumble that I'm supposed to be in this world, but not of it.

How am I going to relate to this world if I'm never even supposed to look at its art or listen to its music? Or talk to its people, or even befriend them?

I certainly wouldn't want to be involved in any of these activities more than churchgoing, bible reading, listening to praise music, or spending time in the company of edifying believing friends.

I always press to keep in mind the goal though, that I am spending my time with Jesus so that I can bring him out to the people and the world who need him desperately.

I'm not a 'movie person' but probably 'To Kill a Mocking Bird'(Gregory Peck)is among my top picks. Alfred Hitchcock's 'Rear Window' has it's only charm and of course 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' is up there. 'Walk the Line' is especially well done.

I'll probably catch a lot of flack for this, but I have always liked the movie "Dogma". Yeah, it's wrong on so many levels, but it takes the flaws of a mistaken faith, grabs it by the throat, and slaps the taste out of its mouth. I've laughed myself silly ever since. So many Christians I talk to think the point of the movie is to be blasphemous, and that is because they can't pay attention to the messages it has to say.
