If this is in the wrong thread please forgive me.

I'm looking for ya all's advice on what I could give my pastor as a christmas gift.

He's really far more than a pastor, he's been a great friend, my counselor and a dad type figure to me. I'd like to get him something really special.

He has this really old bible that is his favorite, its very worn and he doesn't think they are in print any longer. I found a company that is still printing them and I'd like to suprise him with that, do you all think that would be OK?

This is my first year in the church so I'm not sure what the etiquette is. Do I need to give a gift for both he and his wife? Can I do two seperate gifts so that way I can get him the bible? And what would be an acceptable gift for her? I don't know very much about her.

Thanks guys!

Do you really have to? Just keep it simple: Christmas card to him and his wife would be ideal.

Unless you think that he helped you out emotionally and otherwise as you stated, include a Bible of his liking with that card. And address your card to him and his wife.

If you write a dedication inside the Bible - address it to him and his wife as well...just to be on the safe side!

When pastors get gifts that were clearly of some expense to the giver, it can make some (not all) uncomfortable with the intensity that such a gift implies in the relationship.

If you think that might be the case here, some more thought might be wise. Perhaps there are some others you know that also would be interested in joining you in the Bible purchase... then it's from a bunch of you and it's not so intensely personal.

However, if your pastor is more of a personal friend to you (as you say) and also if this is his general ministry style, and he seems quite comfortable to call many of his Church members good friends that he'd love to be close to even if he wasn't a pastor... then your gift fits right in to that dynamic.

As a Pastor; a hug and a "Thank you for being here" is more than enough.

Thanks

Any pastors we've had over the years, even the ones we've been really close to, would have felt embarrassed and uncomfortable to receive such a personal gift from an individual member of their congregation, because they see themselves as there to serve, not to be served.

And with regards to the actual Bible, he may not even want a new version of his old one. As we use our Bibles, they grow with us, and every little note, every turned down page corner, every underlined or highlighted verse, is vital and important to us. It does not matter if the Bible is battered and worn - actually it's better if it is, because it shows that's it's been used and is a vital part of our lives. It's like an old friend.

If you want to give him more than just a card with a personal note, I'd suggest perhaps some home-baked or shop-bought cookies or chocolates, for his household.

This is just a thought, but you might mention to him that you found on line a place that still has the kind of BIBLE that he has. If he is interested he will ask for the name of the place & where to find it.

As to a gift for him, I would make it one for both of them. I'm giving a gift certificate for dinner at a resturant that they both like. If they have children at home you could offer to baby sit so they can go out by themselves.

I think that's a neat idea, but I'd ask him first if he'd like it before you surprise him. You might consider getting his old one rebound if it's just the cover that's in poor condition.

Thanks everyone! I opted to buy the bible but I plan on wrapping it and leaving it on his desk without a card or anything so he won't know its from me. I want him to have it but it doesn't matter where it came from... then I'll give he and his wife a nice card and perhaps a gift certificate. Thanks for all the advice!
