OK, I did something I have never done, and it worked!

I saw a job, and I contacted an old contact of mine, and they are the broker for them, and she is going to forward my resume. Can you beleive it! Networking! It is who you know in this market! I don't have a job or an interview, but hey I will get my resume forwarded with a great reference!

Well i suppose being interviewed by 4 people at once is better than 4 interviews at 4 different times and then being turned down. That has happened to me. Multiple interviews and no job. A big waste of time and money. Many times it's who u know. A lady i work with is facing 4 felony mail theft charges and still got a full time position where i work. The reason, it is assumed, is because she knows many who work at this company. Regardless of the fact she may be in federal prison a few months from now makes little difference to those who hire. Weird.

Personally i would find it a little intimidating to go to an interview under them circumstances. Any one of the interviewers could have a friend or relative who needs a job and would find any excuse to turn u down in spite of your qualifications or job performance. In this case they are the losers. Especially today when jobs are so tight. Companies need excellent workers to compete in a global economy. Just showing up is no longer a guarantee of keeping a job. Suppose it is like marriage, it is one thing to get a job and is another thing to keep it. Anyone can get married but it is another thing to keep the marriage going through the years. In your case reach, the Lord has better plans for you.

I did 5 separate interviews before. Even getting up while I was on vacation camping and doing a phone interview and then the 5 people did not agree on me.

The job was still posted online for months after this. Too bad for them. :)

I'm getting ready to start sending out resumes and interviewing myself. I was having a really hard time over the summer, but I got a job at the tail end of it. It really was only the Lord. The economy is really bad, especially here. I've never had a problem getting a job before - I used to be able to get one in a matter of weeks. But now it is hard. I'm working part-time - but there are no benefits and I need to get myself in a more stable position so that I can move when my lease is up next year. I'm also single - so there is no husband safety net for me (although I have prepared for this). I will probably have to go back to what I did before I came here, which I really don't want to do. But times are hard and I can't limit myself. Or, if there are other positions at my job in another division, I might be able to go there. We'll see.

I'm thinking about relocating, actually. I'll be finished with school soon. I like it here, but the job market is horrible. I'm open next year, so we'll see ...

Reach - I've been reading about your job search. I'm glad that God has opened a lot of temp positions for you to help keep you afloat, but I am praying that you'll get a permanent position soon. You seem very disciplined about your job search. Did you say you were an exec admin? If so, you are probably very good at your job - you seem to be very disciplined and organized judging from your posts.

I agree with you. Part time work it is very hard to keep things going. My husband works and that is all that is saving me. If I was on my own, I would have to move back home.

You are brave. I hate moving.

Thanks for the kinds words. I have been an exec admin in the past, but for the past 5 years I have done HR. Mostly the paperwork for the HR. So that takes a lot of orgainzation.

So I had two interviews the week before Thanksgiving, so it has almost been two weeks. Do you send another email? I am not sure what to do. I figured I would not get an answer before Thanksgiving with so many people going on vacation and such. So I send a quick email?

I wouldn't think that there would be anything wrong with touching base with them after a few more days have passed. It would give them time to recover from the holiday and to get their bearings - but at the same time, it would allow you to find out what is happening or let them know that you are definitely interested in the positions.

I heard something quite interesting today. Over the summer, while I was searching for a job, I would pray and always felt like the Lord was leading me to start a business - to do freelancing. I was sitting in class today, listening to a business professional speak about this part of the country - and in particular the industries here. One of the things he said was that this part of the country is not a place to have a job, but a career. In other words, if you are looking for a traditional job here, it will be very tough (which I've discovered). But if you freelance, position and market yourself, you will find plenty of work - particularly if you are interested in the entertainment industry. I kept thinking about this and about the problems I've had finding work. At home, it was so simple - I'd send in a few resumes and before you knew it, I'd have a job - usually within a week or two (or course the economy was also stronger then too). Yet here, because I have too much experience and perhaps education (I'll be finished with my MA soon), employers haven't been contacting me as much. But, perhaps I'm in the perfect position to consult and to do what I felt the Lord had put in my heart - to freelance. It is definitely something that I've been thinking about and considering - but I think I'm going to start working on a business plan over the next few days ... even as I look for jobs.

I was going to send it on Tues, but I will wait until tues night and send it, so they will get it first thing Wed. I don't want to be too pushy, but I want to know where I stand.

Being a contractor is a great plan. The bad thing is, no benefits. But if you make enough, you can pay them on your own. That is the big reason I need to work. The cost of insurance on my husbands plan is so expensive. :(

You make a very good point reach and it is something for me to consider. I feel like I'm between a rock and a hard place, but I've got to keep moving forward.

Thanks for posting the interview tips! Got an interview for Thursday. It is a part-time job - flexible hours, close to my house. Hopefully it will be something that I can do for a while as I build up my own business - which might take a little while. I'll have insurance through the end of next year (because I'm a student) - so I have a bit of a breather on that for now ...

I have a job interview tomorrow, nothing fancy but it will be work. I just moved to the U.K form the U.S and was finding it so hard to even get any interview set up. I must have sent out 2 dozen resumes with no response, except the occassional "thank you, we are all booked now." Its been rough but I am hopeful and appreciate all the helpful tips on this thread. I am sort of just looking for any job right now, because I know the economy is bad and people who normally would find work are having a hard time.

So I sent out the follow up, and got a response that they filled it. Ugh! So that was 3 up to bat and 3 down. It is really getting tiring.

Hi reach. I got the part-time job that I interviewed for and it basically kick-started my business - so now I have two part-time jobs. I also got a lead on another client who will interview me at the beginning of next year. If I get that, I can either work for them or through my business - which is good. I also just got a lead from a friend of a friend and also a recruiter about two jobs - so I'll need to follow up.

This is the most "action" that I've seen on the job market for a while (all summer I had nothing, nothing, nothing). I'm thankful - but I know that things are tough all over. So I'm glad to get these nibbles.

So, that's the word here. I'll post more details soon.

Awesome! That is great that you are able to do your own business!

I have a question. With the market bad, would you take a job that is not the perfect job, and a huge pay cut, to tie over until the economy picks up again?

I am interviewing on Thur for a temp-perm job and it is over 15K pay cut from wha I am used to making. But it is better than sitting at home, so I think if offered the job, I will take it. It would cover our needs, until the market picks up and I can get a better job.

The thing that really sucks is, the job is the same description I have been doing all along, they just don't want to pay. :(

Reach - yes I would - actually I am doing it. I'm totally and completely going backwards with both of my jobs - in every sense of the word (skills, financial etc.) - but I prayed and asked God about them - and He said to take them. So I did. The thing that is happening on both jobs though is that I'm learning new business areas - in one in particular, it will help me with some other things that I need to complete later this year. One has given me the impetus to start a business. The other has helped me to totally and completely get out of my shell and has helped me in terms of discipline, which is going to help me immensely with any subsequent job. So, I try to look at other things - other than money - as I pray about what to take during this recession.

rgod I have always wanted to do the part time/part time thing. Mainly cause I like variety. But I am hoping to do this also because of a new reason. The current full time job I am at gives health insurance from as little as 24 hours a week. No dental though. I would have to work at least 34 to get dental. But I am sure it wouldn't cost that much more if I just paid for the current dental that I have.

Reach, I would take it. Not only would you be making some money but it's easier sometimes to find a job when you already have one. If it will meet your needs go for it.

Well I was offered a position and I took it. It is for 6 weeks. I am working one week this week, and then come back after the new year. So at least I get out of the house and it is close to home. but a major pay cut. Ugh! But better than unemployment. :)

Congrats Reach! Even though it isn't your end goal, who knows where this might lead. I admire your tenacity - keep the faith.

Mrs. Above_All - I totally understand what you are saying about insurance. The only reason I can do this is because I have insurance through school. Otherwise, my hands would be tied.

Well I took the job. It is very interesting position. I trained before the holiday and I am back full time as of today. Very crazy.

The new year is upon us, so the job search will pick up again.

Hope you all had a great holiday.
