They won't work for trying not to get pregnant. I've not used them, but from what I understand, they show when there is a change in some hormone that shows you will be ovulating in the next day or so. The problem with using them as birth control is that sperm can live for quite a while, up to 3 days, I think. So by the time you knew that you were about to ovulate, there could already be sperm present hunting for that egg.

Would they not help you at least find out when you ovulate? (I don't know anything about them.) I recently found out that I ovulate earlier than we are taught we ovulate, would a predictor kit at least help you find that out to make planning easier? (Again I'm pleading complete ignorance on the issue.)

Yes, they will help show when you ovulate. However, by the time you find out that you've ovulated, it is too late for not TTC purposes because you can have live sperm still swimming around in there from when you didn't know you were going to ovulate.

Ok, I get what you're saying. Yeah, I was thinking for future knowledge, not for month to month planning. So taking a few months to determine a pattern and then going from there.

That is a good point about the prediction kits. I'll have to try them out next month.

I'm starting my good old PMS symptoms. Should have my period early next week.

Lexie, you might find charting to be helpful in figuring out your cycle, even if it isn't for ttc or tta purposes. If you need any help let me know... With your family history of IF it would probably be a good thing to try.

How long are your cycles? When are you ovulating?

Ok, so here's a question for you. Are there any BC pills that prevent fertilization? I don't want to debate about BC pills please! I just simple want information on whether or not there are kinds that prevent fertilization.

BTW, I ask because hubby is NOT liking condoms.

They all primarily work by preventing fertilization via suppression of ovulation, but if they don't suppress ovulation then an egg could be fertilized. I was on the Nuva Ring off and on for...2 years? It prevented ovulation most of the time, but was still allowing some hormone fluctuation, which gives me migraines. I was also having fertile, or suspicious CF(although it could have just been from having a foreign object in my hooha all the time) so I switched to Seasonique. So far I have been totally "dry", no CF to speak of and my charts are totally an-ov which means I'm not ovulating.

Thanks Ryanne!

I'm just wondering what the percentage rates are for the side effects and risks. That kinda makes me wonder. I know that you won't be able to tell until you try it. But isn't it nerve racking in the beginning not knowing how it would effect you? I know that any meds of any kind have side effects though.

It is nerve wracking, but I figure I can't know until I try, lol. The only one I really worry about is weight gain, but so far I haven't ever had that problem. If I did I would stop them, lol.

Weight gain hoovers. But more so are the possible blood clots and heart attack.

Yeah, but unless you are over 35 or smoke the risk of those is pretty slim.

I'll be 35 in March. LOL

Well, I have to go to the obgyn anyway. You know I haven't yet? I know, I know. lol Let's see what she says. I'm also wanting to bring hubby with me actually so that she can talk to the both of us about our options. But if there indeed BCPs out there than prevent fertilization and thus ovulation then I'm open. Anyhoo, yeah...We are trying not to conceive at this time. Duh!

I would not be opposed to BCP's if we were actively preventing. However, I think my days in this thread may be limited.......I may be going over to that OTHER very very very scary thread. ya know.....TTC

I agree, it is scary. That is why I am going to the not preventing thread, in April and not the TTC thread.

But those are huge steps for you Sharon! I am very proud of you. BTW: Don't watch births on TV, it is scary! LOL!

I'm still here with you, Ryanne. My husband says he doesn't want us to have kids til I am 30, and that is 7.25 years away...

I'm definitely here with you! We were just married in June and are actively preventing until at least our one-year anniversary... after that, we'll see. MAYBE ttc next fall? A big maybe!

I'm of the mindset that after that time frame, we'll leave it in God's hands (not preventing) until we definitely know we're ready for/want kids.

Trish, are you interested in the FAM/NFP birth control methods? The reason I became interested was because I knew I didn't want to deal with the possible side-effects (including fertilization and/or miscarriage while on the pill), and suspected my husband wouldn't care for condoms either. It's worked well for us so far! He likes that I give him an approximate calendar to go from at the beginning of every cycle, so he knows when I'm 'good' and when I'm 'not'.

Yah, that was half my problem with NFP... I didn't want to be a slave to the thermometer for the next ten years of my life.

There are actually shortcuts so you're not taking your temperature/charting every day... there are months I only temp for two weeks total - the day after my period ends to three days after ovulation - that gives plenty enough information for prevention purposes. It actually doesn't take that much effort. Some digital thermometers store the temps for you, so you can be reminded later, say, after you truly wake up!

Hi everyone, I'm going to jump right in here. Since this board be good for me. As some would know I got 2 girl's in foster care. Hubby wants a baby and I'm scared to have one because I'm worried Department of Children Protection would take that baby from us. I said to hubby I think about it. We both agreed give me till next November to come up with the answer.
