What a blessing it was Saturday Morning to be able to attend the sweet Homegoing Celebration for Fannie Pearson, mother of Diplomats Quartet owner, Jimmy Pearson. The simple service was fitting for the little lady that had lived such a simple life, yet it held so much elegance and dignity. All of this personified Mrs. Pearson perfectly. The service was well attended by may fans of The Diplomats, as well as friends from the community, and the Fullerville Baptist Church. A little while back, Mrs. Pearson quipped that she had outlived all of her friends, and that she doubted that she'd have any floral arrangements when she passed. How wrong she was! They were some of the most beautiful flowers I've seen at a funeral in a LONG time. Corey & Rita Pearson, along with Joe Brown & Lamar Newton sang several beautiful selections, including, "How Beautiful Heaven Must Be", "Amazing Grace" and "How Sweet It Will Be". Understandably, there were a LOT of tears, but these seasoned professionals sang their heart out, despite their broken hearts. Corey gave the eulogy, and reminded all of his cousins that he "was Granny's favorite grandchild... 'cause she told me I was!" He reminisced about sitting on her front porch in the little mill village of Villa Rica as the played 'made up games', like 'What Kind Of Car Will Come Down The Road Next". Pretty imaginative. He also talked about them sharing their favorite snacks- Coca Cola and Little Debbie Snack Cakes. That, he admitted was "why I'm so fat!" One last vignette that Corey shared was a few years ago, at the age of 97, "Granny" decided that she was giving up a life long love affair with snuff. Her reasoning was that it was gonna kill her. All these sweet memories brought a smile to those in the congregation that may have never met this great lady. Mrs. Pearson was just a few days from celebrating her 100th birthday. Corey explained that she received a letter from Sonny Purdue, the governor State of Georgia, acknowledging her birthday, the day before she passed away. The day of her death, the family received a similar honor from President Bush. On Friday, Willard Scott honored her on popular birthday segment of The Today Show. A video presentation was shown, depicting the life of Mrs. Pearson. It was accompanied by several touching pre-recorded tunes by The Diplomats. Finally, Rev. Steve Swafford, pastor of Fullerville Baptist Church, presented a short sermon and concluded with words of encouragement to the family. Before dismissing, Rev. Swafford conducted a brief committal service. Since the family had already planned to celebrate the 100th birthday on Sunday afternoon, they all decided that there would be a private burial and they'd meet at the cemetery on Sunday afternoon. This decision also allowed The Diplomats to be able to honor their Saturday evening engagement at Karen Peck's New River Music Park. I also attended that concert, and let me tell you, the sweet Spirit was just as prevalent during The Diplomat's stand as it was in the funeral. There was a special anointing on them, and the fans just really seemed to embrace them and their songs that night. To sum up the words of an elderly gentleman at the concert... "There's a lot of love up here in this mountain tonight!" And he was right. There was. It was the perfect closing to a really special day. Continue to pray for The Pearson family as they adjust to life without their "Granny".

Thank you, Charlie, for such a wonderful description of the HomeGoing service. I wasn't able to be there, but I feel like I have shared in it now. I'll continue to pray for the Pearson family.

Update on Debbie....... She finally got the temporary cast off, stitches and staples out, and got a new 3-D cast that can be removed, when necessary. She still is in good spirits, but hasn't got to go to any concert dates with me yet. My girls keep her occupied when I'm gone. She still has a lot of pain in her ankle and leg, but has really been a trooper. Thanks for all the concerns and prayers. Joe

If you can't wait until the pre-Thanksgiving concert to see the Diplomats, they are going to be in New Georgia, November 7 at 6:00 pm. Get an early taste of what the pre-Thanksgiving concert will be. Hope to see some of you there.

Jim, Rita, and Corey are fine folks! They have always treated me as one of the family. Their former pianst, Lamar Newton has been a friend for a long time. He and his wife Vicki are as genuine as they come! Retired Bass Player

Thanks for the prayers and e-mails and phone calls , Just talk with Joe and he is resting very well at this time , He had some pain in his chest area and the doctors decided to keep him to run some test just to see what is going on. Debbie said she had to make Joe go to the Doctor because Joe is like every true southern gospel ministry minded person , He hates to miss dates . Keep Joe and Debbie both on your prayer list as Joe goes for test Friday. Old Satan is hard at work but God still has everything under control. Jim Pearson

Just got in from hearing the Diplomats tonight. Jimmy said that Joe had the test late this afternoon and that everything was clear. Praise The Lord. The Diplomats did an excellent job tonight. They had a fill in for Joe on the bass part. When Jimmy introduced the fill in he said they had traded low notes for looks. Kevin Cook was back with the Diplomats singing bass for Joe tonight and probably the rest of the weekend. He did a great job on the bass part. Kevin was the Diplomats bass singer for a while three or four years ago. Was good to see him.

Well, last night was great. The Dips opened up with a really good, spiritual stand, then The Dixies romped and stomped a while, much to the delight of everyone. That Pat is one more singing machine. Always a pleasure to be around Wes & Scoot, too. OH! I almost forgot... The Beasley Boys sang, too. That's The Diplomat guys with their friend, and SG legend, Mr. Les Beasley. I don't think Mr. Les has had this much fun in the last 20 or so years. He's a sweet old man. Then, The Primitives brought the house down with their trademark, spiritual gospel/bluegrass tunes. Tolbert was in rare form, and really sang his heart out. The next generation of Riddle Brothers made their debut at Fullerville. (These two great kids, who played mandolin & flat top, are the children of Regan, Mike & Larry's younger brother Darren.) They wowed the crowd with the haunting "What Child Is This?". Simply beautiful. Then, Brother Randy blessed everyone with his current signature song, "Walking In The Highway". They encored it several times, and the emcee wouldn't let them leave the stage without bringing Tolbert around to sing yet another great song. After the short break, all the groups showed out during a lengthy sing-a-long segment. It was all wonderful, but my fav was when Mrs. Rita sang "God Walks the Dark Hills". My, oh, my. It was ON! Was good to see my friend Danny Jones from the Singing News there, as well as former Tony Gore & Majesty baritone, Scott Thomas. He's a straight up guy, and one more songwriting machine. It was good to see him! Former product manager for Wendy Bagwell & The Sunliters, Betty Sue Hyatt, was there. She's a doll. Oh, pray for her husband, Bobby. He has cancer, and is taking chemo right now. They are long-time family friends of ours. We love 'em very much. Well, we'll be off for Round Two, here in about 45 minutes. Tonight will feature The Inspys, The Dips, and a local group. Maybe, I'll get Bro. Cook to show me some of his hot licks on the 88s. Seriously, they are legendary, too, so it's really always an honor to once more sit in their audience. They have lots more days behind them than ahead, so I just relish getting to hear their trademark style 'one more time'.

We're going to be headed that way in a few minutes. Traffic will be very heavy on Friday afternoon, so we're gonna leave a few minutes earlier than usual. Gonna want to get one of those hotdogs over there also.
