The Happening- not much happening here. I usually like M Night's movie but this was one movie that just went over my head. Actually, we ended up laughing a few times watching the movie.

The Express (The Ernie Davis Story)...loved it...may have been as good as Remember the Titans, but will have to watch again before I can commit to that statement

A Dirty Carnival
The title seems to speak for itself, given it's just another generic, Korean gangster film--albeit of a 2 1/2 hour long, epic running time. Basically it's about this rising mob lieutenant in his late 20's, trying to muscle his way to the top, only to be brought down by his technically more successful kid brother, who is now a rising film maker (the former undoes himself by inadvertently reveals the goings on with a lawyer's murder).
The Apartment (L'Apartement)
The original French basis for Wicker Park is plot twister to say the least, but it would have been more enjoyable had it not been for the closed-captioning styled subtitling. It took the incentive for me to fully concentrate on this classic, which is a pity. Maybe I'll try to shop for a Region 2/UK distributed version of the film, given how much the "bright boys" of Lions Gate soured the viewing experience...
And oh... did I mentioned how much Monica Belluci and Romane Bohringer look smoking hot?

My family and I went to see The Boy In The Striped Pajamas this weekend.
I highly recommend this film.
The movie is constructed around the events of Nazi Germany during the Holocaust. Although it uses the events of the Holocaust it was more about how we try to hide the ugliest things from our children and how that can rob them of their innocence and add to a confusing world view.

Quantum of Solace
Very complicated storyline, not to be bogged down by simplistic genre conventions--even by traditional 007 standards, like...
POSSIBLE PLOT SPOILERS!
the part where Jeffrey Wright's character, Felix, is disgusted with his involvement with the CIA-Quantum conspiracy, over oil!
But even with this somewhat, easily-interpreted jab at American foreign policies, QoS never satisfies itself with just resigning to that predictably cynical notion of industrialized democratic nations--America especially, being too eager at worst, reluctant at best, with bedding these shady, deep-pocketed individuals, secret societies--ESPECIALLY come the climax when Mathieu Amalric's (one of my favorite French actors  ) Dominic Greene, commented on how politics don't mean squat to their ilk, if money can be made. Call me crazy, but why does Amalric's performance reminds me of his prior role in Spielberg's Munich? No, seriously...

It was "anniversary weekend" for us this past weekend....my parents were in town, so they had the kids, while we stayed the weekend at a fabulous downtown hotel.
My wife and I LOVE going to movies...(we went ALL the time before having kids)...so, we took the opportunity to see "RACHEL GETTING MARRIED" (very complex film, though, extremely well written and made, even though it was shot with just "handheld" cameras).....and, "QUANTUM OF SOLACE"......a very different Bond movie, but, also very good, as well....as "ASLOUIE" mentioned in the post above, the storyline was quite complicated for a BOND movie.....
got an e-mail yesterday from some friends who want to do a "guys movie night" next week to see "BOND", and I probably will go..to see it again, and catch what I "missed" the first time.
Overall....Two EXTREMELY "different" movies.....and both were very good.

Appaloosa. Standard modern western, Ed Harris (who directed) was his normal crusty self. Viggo Mortensen was good as his sidekick. Renee Zellweger more annoying than usual.

I was surprise with the F also. I believe that PG-13 movies are allowed to have 1 F word but I thought I heard 2 or 3 but then I could be wrong. The trailer scene with the girl that was picked up was also unnecessary to the story. I just think the movie could have been better with less plots and unnecessary scenes.

Fred Claus- Here's another movie that just went all over the place. I liked the first part and I actually laughed on some of the scenes but then it just went all over the place. Young kids will be bored because it's no Elf. I was surprised to see Kevin Spacy on the movie since he seemed to be out of place in the movie. Actually even Rachel Weiss...just some strange casting. I think the intention was there but it was not delivered. Stick with Santa Clause and Elf. And btw, female Santa helper was wearing a booby outfit...just disturbing.

I saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull the other day. I was kind of disapointed with the film because aliens in an Indy movie is crazy! I'm not sure what Lucas and Spielburg were thinking. They've lost it I guess. That or they have run out of ideas.
I did love the way that the movie captured a look at what the 1950s was like. That was a blast. I looooved that. But overall I give this film about a 5 or a 6.
The Last Crusade was my favorite.
I look forward to seeing Indy 5. I have a feeling that if it is made, they'll come up with a better story that the fans want to see.
Harrison Ford is still a great actor.

THe X-Files: I Want to Believe. Didn't see this one in the theaters despite being a big XF fan back in the day. Maybe it's a case again of lowered expectations but I actually thought it was pretty good (3 out of 4 stars, IMO). It's basically treated like a two hour episode of the series, but updated because it's like 7 years after the last episode of the TV show. While the scope of the movie falls within the Monster-of-the-Week mode (in this case, the monsters being humans), the big reveal as to what's going on is pretty horrific. One little nitpick - apparently the government hasn't pursued Mulder because they considered him simply an insignificant fly in the ointment. Well, he was convicted of murder in the end of the series, and Scully and Walter Skinner (and John Doggett and Monica Reyes) all aided and abetted his escape. How can Skinner still be an assistant director of the FBI, and Scully an openly practicing pediatric surgeon? Otherwise, was a good experience to revisit the show and the main characters.
Also started this week: La Femme Nikita, season one. Another show from about a decade ago, and one that holds up well against time, especially in the early episodes. Got this from the big Best Buy season DVD set sale, with some of my birthday money.

My wife and I finally took our kids to see Madagascar 2. This was my 18 month old son's first movie. He paid attention through most of it.
It was ok. The first one was much better.
We will probably go see Bolt soon.
