Unfortunately the high is in the upper 90s today and tomorrow. Yeah, it got hot here too all of a sudden. The humidity is a killer. We've never had summer required reading. There's no way Linz could do it now, she is gone 12 hours 4 days a week. 11 hour days and 1 hr travel time to and from. She loves her job, thankfully!

They do summer reading here too. Ty ended up reading the Odessey in like 3 weeks because we weren't sure what English class he would be placed in his freshman year. THAT was tough reading. Last summer I don't remember what he was assigned anymore but he hated it and I don't think they ever really discussed it in either his honor English or his American history classes. This summer - I'm sure they'll have more assigned reading. Yippie. Not. I'll have to look at the schools website again. I'm not sure if Aryn will have any summer reading or not. They have recently changed some of the gifted programing and I heard they may start requiring summer reading. Aryn won't mind tho - as long as it's an interesting read and not historical fiction. Blessings, Garsy

The rising 4th and 5th grade Gifted&Talented classes were asked to read at least 30 minutes everyday this summer. They are allowed to read anything they want with a few exceptions. The teacher has asked them not to read a certain list of books, which she plans to teach next year. Of course, if students have already read them, that's okay. They were also asked not to read too many "lower level" books. Middle and high schoolers were able to choose from a list of 4-6 books per grade level the past 5 years. We haven't heard anything this year yet. Nothing on the website yet, either. I'm thinking we'll get something with the report cards next week. With the focus on reading our district has, no way are they going to have a summer with no reading.

She goes on trail rides with customers. They go in a group of 16 and each employee is responsible for 4 riders. She goes in early to get the horses ready and stays after the last ride to take care of them. One day she came home and couldn't climb up the steps, she was so sore. She's getting used to it though.

She loves to ride. She rides Alaina bareback. When Dan and Kim were home last week, Kim tried to ride Alaina and she wouldn't let her, so Kim had to show her who's boss. Kim can't understand how Linz can just hop up and ride her. The other day, Alaina did not want Kim to touch her, and she hauled off and hit Kim's face and knocked her to the ground, and almost knocked Kim out. Her face was swollen the next day. I've never seen the horse act like that with Linz. It scared one of the grandbabies so bad she decided she didn't want a ride after all. Linz was at work or else she would have taken them.

The book the school is reading is "A Long Way Gone" and ds has to read 1984. I asked him how his day was and he started grumbling about the reading and he has to do a packet for AP Euro. Dd has 3 books to read and she's taking a class at the community college. I think they'll be busy. Kath, that's good that Linz like her job. I'm afraid of horses.

What class is your daughter taking, Deb? Kath, that job sounds like such a good thing for Linz! I'm glad she likes it! I don't think I'd be too happy if my kids had summer reading, especially specific books with no choices. Particularly when I think about kids working long hours or being away from home for much of the summer. That said, K took a large stack of books to camp with her for these first two weeks there. Hmmmm, I think maybe I'd rather her be hanging out with friends and not just hiding away with a book (like she does at home). Dee

I'm with you! But they will claim that they do have a clue and you can't convince them otherwise. There are other crazy assumptions. that don't make any sense either. Zoe's got a spot in the school's talent show on Wednesday!!! She is super excited! Blessings, Garsy

I was at a garage sale this morning that had a bunch of official scout clothing. I bought a new shirt for my son that we'll have to take the patches off and replace with local patches. But better to spend five bucks than ???. I wish I knew if he'd ever need official scout pants or jackets for anything. I'll ask hubby when he gets home; I took the ladies number. They had a backpack there too. I'd buy everything regardless. There is ALWAYS someone around that could use it, especially in our troop! Scout clothing brand new is expensive! Don't they get that boys grow like weeds throughout their teen years? It gets really expensive when you're buying a new uniform shirt every 2 years! I like girl scout uniform pieces much better as because unless you insist on the girls wearing only official scout wear they can get by with a vest or a sash. Not the boys! They MUST have the shirt as EVERYTHING goes right on the shirt. Well we filled out and mailed in our census form. But we STILL got visits from not one but two census officials. Apparently the first one really blew it and didn't do things right with us and a lot of our neighbors and was actually accused of being drunk when she was performing her duties that ALL of those forms had to tossed. So we had a second show up on Thursday during dinner - so she arranged to call on Friday and came back this afternoon because she couldn't get a hold of me by phone on Friday. (family issues in Minnesota kept me on the phone ALL afternoon and evening.) One week of school left. Aryn's math final is Tuesday and Wednesday. Ty has finals Monday through Thursday. Friday is one of those fluff days for everyone. Aryn's school is having the kids do something fun and they get to participate in different sessions throughout the school - They each got to pick three and will circulate between the three during that day. Aryn choose playing Civilizations 3 computer game, the crafts room and baking cookies. They do their awards program on Thursday for 6th and 7th graders and Friday for 8th graders. I'm so ready for summer. Blessings, Garsy

N LOVES playing the Civilization computer games! Garsy, do your troops there require the official pants/shorts? I know they are crazy expensive, but they don't require them here. The people who had the pants said that they bought them for their son to go to Nationals 5 years ago, which I figured out meant Jamboree. N isn't going to Jamboree this year, and I'm just not sure about buying them "just in case" he needs them down the road. I'll talk to hubby. He knows who is going to Jamboree this year from the troop, but I'm thinking it is only 1 or two kids. The one I'm not sure the pants would fit, the other one I'm thinking might be going maybe could use them. But I'm not sure if both are even going. Yeah, I hate to pass up a good bargain; I'm just trying to figure out if they could be used. I bought the shorts first (which I hope got home because I can't find them now). I went back later and got the shirt and her number. The shirt is a men's M so hopefully it will last a while, and not be too big. The one he has now should be replaced. N's hiking backkpack is a junior size. So I'm wondering about that backpack there too. Hubby has a full size one, but maybe we'll need another????? Dee

Ethan has a pair of the scout shorts but that's only because they are hand-me downs from Ty originally purchased at a yard sale! They STILL have the tags in them as no one has EVER wore them. They fit Ethan this year - but he doesn't like HOW they fit. Blessings, Garsy

We've not done that here, Deb. Garsy, yeah, the lady at the sale said the scout pants are around $40 new. N tried his scout shorts on and seems to like them OK. I called the lady back after I talked to hubby. We'll see what she has left, if anything, and go from there. I do think I got what would be most useful to us. Dee

We hold Field day and the Talent show on the same day. This year however I'm predicting at least a little rain on Field day. The weather forecast doesn't look promising. On my way to school this morning to finish up some art things and to help the PE teacher prep for Field Day, tomorrow. Then to the grocery store. I'm being lazy tonight - getting some frozen pizzas. Blessings, Garsy

I have dentist issues. Remind me to change N and R's dentist appt in August. I think it is scheduled the day we need to pick K up from camp. Someone yesterday told me school starts August 17. Yuck. That seems a little early; it usually starts a week later than that. I was told we didn't get out earlier than usual. Bummer. Why such a short summer? E had a baby boy this morning! We're going down Saturday afternoon probably. It was nice of her to have it when we were needing to go that direction to pick up K from camp anyway! Baby was due next week. Hubby's mom seemed to think we should be going down sooner but it is 1.5 hours, hubby works, and I figure they need a little time to themselves before we all show up. Dee

Money is tight right now. Hubby knows this. But, he doesn't seem to get that $5-$10 purchases are hard on our wallets. The car payment needs made, he wanted to drop it off instead of mailing it. So, he was going to take BigBee out for dinner when he dropped it off. Less than 50cents for a stamp or $10 for dinner + gas money. I had to say no. That night, I took DeeDee into town to plant flowers for a service project. Later on, PBee told me he wanted to take BigBee out for ice cream while we were away. So, another $5 instead? I know he was trying to get one-on-one time with the boy, but they were alone at the house. And, yes, I bought ice cream too - I spent $2 for a package of 6 fudgebars for the girls who helped. I have to stop doing that, but I really need him to stop too and I hate telling him NO. Then, he shuts down and doesn't do anything fun for weeks. Not even $2 packages of fudgebars. OK - I feel better now. DeeDee is packing to go to Savannah GA next Monday. BigBee is packing to move to camp/work tomorrow. We will have a child free home next week.

The weather cooperated! We even had the sun peek out and smile upon us a few times yesterday!!! Of course hubby got in trouble for essentially soaking a good third of the 4th and 5th grade classes. A couple of teachers had problems with it - but by 2 PM they were all dry for the talent show anyway! And we gave all of them the lecture before heading inside the building that there was to be NO complaining and NO wanting to go down to the nurses office for dry clothes. It was a blast to be honest! It's field day! The kids are supposed to have fun and if there is even a smidgen of water around it will attract some kids like honey attracts bears! Zoe did well with the talent show! I really wish they would have given her a microphone because those in the back had a really hard time hearing her. Had to take the big kids to school today. I got to reading my book and wasn't paying attention to the time and neither were the kids. It's my fault so I got in the car and took them. In a way I really like these kinds of mornings. Gives me time to connect with my kids without the distraction of home. We shut off the radio and just talk. Gotta run! This is my last day of volunteering! Blessings, Garsy

Oh, mommabee. I hear you on the money woes. We'll pay $$$ on credit cards, but then more than $$$ is charged to them. Money can be such a vicious cycle sometimes. Garsy, good luck on your last day volunteering!
