I've heard people talk about making their own laundry soap to use in washing machines, and I'm hoping someone here will have a "recipe" so washing clothes will be cheaper. Anyone?

You can do a Google search (or Yahoo, etc) "homemade laundry soap" and many sites come up with various recipes. Some people even evaluate the recipes and tell if they get the clothes clean, etc. Some recipes don't do well with hard water, etc.

I've wanted to try making laundry soap, but I couldn't find one of the ingredients in the recipe I had, so I just sort of forgot about it. However, you have brought it to my mind again, so I just may look into it again!

I used to make my own, but my store stopped carrying the Fels Naphta soap that I used to make it, so I haven't done it in a while. I made the powdered version because it was easier to make and to store.

It's been too long since I've made it to remember what ratio I used, but I think it was one cup Borax, one cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda, and one bar Fels Naphta. I just cut the FN into chunks and threw it in my food processor, pulsed it until it was in crumbs, then added the borax and soda and whirred it all together.

I used the small scoop that came in a tub of oxyclean as my measuring scoop. I think it was about 3/4 a scoop per normal load.

1/3 bar fels naptha, ivory, or zote
½ c. arm & hammer washing soda (sodium carbonate or soda ash)
½ c 20 mule team borax (sodium borate)
2 gal. bucket

Grate soap & put in sauce pan adding 6 c. of water & heat until soap melts.

Add washing soda & borax, stir until dissolve.

Remove from heat.

Pour 4 c. hot water into the bucket then add soap mixture & stir.

Next add 1 gal. + 6 c. of water & stir.

Let soap sit for 24hrs. it will gel .

Use ½ c per load.

*************************************
We're going to make this again in about 2 weeks. This time, we're gonna add some all fabric bleach to the mixture when we add the borax and soda.

We store it up in empty laundry soap containers.

My mom makes the same recipe that doinkdom posted but makes it a dry powder. Works great.

I make the powder too. I use 1 cup grated soap to 1/2 cup washing soda and 1/2 cup borax. Mix well in an airtight container (I use an old plastic butter bowl.) Use 1- 2 tablespoons per wash, depending on how dirty. I have a front loader and put the powder mixture on top of my clothes. I use vinegar in the rinse.

You do not have to use Fels Naptha, you can use Ivory or any natural soap. I have also used Octagon soap. You can even use scented soap if you like.

All products for detergent making are available at Ace Hardware, if you can't find the washing soda anywhere else.

Thank you, ladies!

Yeah, finding the Fels Naptha was why I didn't do this before; thank you for the alternatives. I can't wait to try this!

I guess I should add that while this cleans very well, there is no whitening agent in the mix. You still may need to use bleach on your whites.

You may also want to check out this site. I have ordered from here:

Do you save a lot of money doing this? Or, do you do it for another reason?

We have new machines that require HE detergent, and it's amazing at how little the new washers require.

It costs less than a penny a load so for me, it's cheaper and I kinda like it.

Because of loss of income we had to make cutbacks. I do it because it is cheaper, but also I know what is in my detergent and it is not full of additives.

Our job situation is better, but I will continue to use homemade detergent. I've never been the homemaker type, but learned to do so much when it was necessary and found out that I actually like doing more myself.

I use a modification of the Fels Naptha recipe. I grind up the soap and keep it separate from the Borax and washing soda mixture. For regular loads I use one tsp of soap and one tsp of Borax/soda mix. For me, the washing soda was the hardest thing to find. I did a little research and discovered that it was sodium carbonate. That's the same stuff they sell to raise the pH in swimming pools, so I just bought lots of that in the summer. Our local grocery now sells washing soda, so I just buy that.

I started making my own soap because my husband and I are allergic to the perfumes added to most detergents. I couldn't get the unscented versions in bulk, so they were fairly expensive. Even though Fels Naptha has a strong scent, we don't react to it.

Our HyVee grocery store carries both the Fels Naptha and washing soda. They're both in the detergent section.

We found another great use for Fels Naptha soap. My son and I are very allergic to poison ivy. Fels works better than anything else we've found for removing the oils from our skin.

HE stands for high efficiency. You will find this on new washers. Mine is a front loader HE. You are supposed to use only HE detergent with a HE washer.

Ooh, that's good to know! My oldest son is also allergic to PI and well, we live in the woods so it's a problem for him, especially in the spring and fall when he's outside tromping around a lot. Thanks!!

Does this work with hard water? The water here is VERY hard...it actually ruins the pipes.

This last batch seemed a little foamy, I might've stirred it too much. But, I skimmed off the suds and it was fine.

The consistency is similar to egg drop soup.

Our water isn't very hard, so I'm not sure. I would think you could add a little vinegar to the wash water as a booster if your water was hard.

I only made the liquid mix once. It seemed like an awful lot of work and it felt slimy. I just put the dry ingredients into the water at the very beginning, let the washer fill 1/4-1/2 way before adding clothes, and I've never had problems with the soap dissolving.

Thank you, everyone, for all the recipes!

Payday is coming up and I've already found the closest place that sells Fels Naptha and washing soda (a Kroger store).

Soap making time! Yay!
